    • (Research):There is a family tradition that the original surname of the Burnside family was Wallace of the Burn side ,and later The Burnside Wallaces , to distinguish them from other branches.Later the Wallace was dropped and Burnside became used as the family surname.

Having followed the fortunes of Charles Edward the pretender until his final defeat at Culloden in 1746, the founders of the American branch emigrated to South Carolina.

Another branch of the Burnside family can be traced back to the Ballymoney area of Co Antrim and to a migration of Ulster Presbyterians to Londonderry in New Hampshire in 1718

The revolt of the American colonies against Britain divided them, some joining the patriots, others remaining loyal to the crown.
