    Notes
    • A complete and in depth record of William,Fanny, and their descendants has been written in 2010 by Colin Carlin,in his book "William Kirkpatrick of Malaga".
    • (Research):William is mainly remembered as the grandfather of Eugenie ,wife of Napoleon Bonaparte III,but this is an injustice. He was also an erstwhile businessman ,and a man of liberal and progressive idea's.Lead mining and processing ,cotton, and sugar production formed just part of his business interests.

William Kirkpatrick held the office of American Consul at Malaga ,and he and his descendants were converts to the Catholic Faith. Some archivists argue the reasoning for the conversion was to gain acceptance into the best Andalusian society, but William may also have made an astute business decision , reckoning a more favourable acceptance within the Spanish business community was possible.

A little known achievement was the family's contribution to the commencement of the wine industry in Australia.
Mr James Busby Esq of New South Wales , toured France and Spain in 1831 ,gathering information on winegrowing and production. He is recorded as receiving valuable information from Mr Kirkpatrick,in Spain, who agreed to take on the task of gathering large numbers of vine cuttings.Eventually ,over three hundred of these cuttings were successfully grown, in the Botanical Gardens in Sydney. These original vines were to propogate the original vineyards of Australia.William also instructed James Busby in the business of dried fruit production and export.
