    Notes
    • The day after their eldest child was born (6th February 1874) the family left from England to go to NZ , and on 27th May 1874, arrived at Lyttelton on board the "Varuna" (Ship: 1311tons Captain:Rowe, Surgeon Superintendent)The Varuna encountered a severe gale in the Bay of Biscay during which several chain plates were broken and chains had to be passed under her to secure her masts, remaining round her more or less during the voyage; this retarded her passage (New Zealand Shipping Co.)Thomas Varuna Rowe Kennedy was named after the ship and the captain.

News reports of the time of her death stated: "A woman named Mary Kennedy was found drowned in the Avon this morning. She is supposed to have been sleeping on the bank and rolled in. At the inquest a verdict of found drowned was returned." Mary at the time was living at 5 Worcester Street, Christchurch.

Mary's entry in the death registry shows 8 of her children were still alive at the time of her death and that her service was taken by a methodist minister. Her grave has no headstone. A newspaper item from 19 November 1891 shows that all of their children ,(aged between three and fourteen years)were removed from both her and Anthony due to neglect [drunkeness and squalor] which Anthony strongly denied, however neighbours disagreed. The paper reported that there were no beds for the children, and the house had no furniture. The children were sent into the streets to beg, and Mary spent that money on drink. The children were all sent to the Burnham Industrial School in Christchurch, and Anthony was required to provide 17 shillings and sixpence toward their weekly support. (Ref:Press, Volume XLVIII, Issue 8025, 20 November 1891, Page 6)

It also appears that Mary had been in and out of gaol over the years for drunkeness. Anthony stuck with her throughout the years and in fact did not desert the family,as was first thought.

Much of the information on Anthony,Mary and their descendants was kindly supplied by a Great Great Granddaughter Sarndra Lees.
    • (Research):Although the family name is spelt McCooke in the 1911 census of Ireland ,Mary's marriage record has her name spelt as McCook (this spelling is also used in her New Zealand records)
