    Notes
    • The family name has also been spelt Bruis,Breaux or Brus.

The original de Bruce family came from Normandy, when Robert ,a Norman Knight(died c1094), accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066(Ref-The Riverside Dictionary of Biography). They were granted forty-three manors in East and West Riding of Yorkshire and fifty-one manors in North Riding of Yorkshire.Robert was the founder of the Monastery in Gisborough ,North Yorkshire,England

The younger branch later migrated to Scotland.

Robert,1st Lord of Skelton, succeeded to the land of Annandale through his mother Agnes Aunard ,his fathers second wife. The title Lords of Skelton passed from Bruce family hands in c1271 due to the lack of any male heirs to Peter de Bruce ,7th Lord of Skelton and his wife,Helena de Mildain. The huge estate was distributed amongst his four sisters.
