    • Robert McVeety/McVity enlisted as a private with HM 27th foot Northern District on 22 Jan. 1831 when he was 20 years old.From July 1831 the Regt. was in Ireland (Fermoy, Belfast, Birr, Clare Castle, Mullinger and Cove) until March of 1834 when the Regt. was sent to Jamaica on board the troop ship Romney. A posting to Jamaica was considered a death sentence at this time because of malaria and other diseases.Death rates for this posting could cut an organization by two thirds in the first year alone. The Regt. was then shipped to Halifax, Nova Scotia in Sep 1840.Ref:Megantic County Pioneers.
